Attending a Fishing Tournament

We arrived in Puerto Escondido just before their annual three day fishing tournament. We had a lot of fun hanging out at all the festivities — who would have guessed!

It was fascinating to watch how much time and money went into competing in a big money fishing tournament. Between the main tournament and the subsequent one for all the boats going back to Cabo the prize pot was $1,200,000. We learned this isn’t even close to the richest. The Black and Blue Marlin Tournament in Cabo has a purse of $12MM, with category winners taking home $2MM-$3MM. The 1st place team here took home just under $370,000.

The whole thing was just like a major sailing regatta, something like Swiftsure or Southern Straits in the PNW, with the exception that you can win something other than bragging rights at the yacht club bar.

We got up early the first day of fishing to watch the 0600 start. Video below.
